Hormonal control of the malpighian tubules of the stick insect, Carausius morosus.

چکیده
Factors have been isolated from the central nervous system of the stick insect, Carausius morosus, which affect the rate of secretion of the Malpighian tubules (Gersch et al. i960; Unger, 1965; Vietinghoff, 1967), but it has not yet been shown that these factors are of physiological importance in vivo. There is, however, an accumulation of stainable material in the corpora cardiaca of Carausius on dehydration (Pflugfelder, 1937), and Ramsay (1955a) found that the rate of secretion of tubules in situ varied according to the state of hydration of the insect. The control of the Malpighian tubules by a hormone originating in the nervous system, whose level in the haemolymph has been shown to vary, has been demonstrated in Rhodnius (Maddrell, 1963), Dysdercus (Berridge, 1966a) and Periplaneta (Wall & Ralph, 1964; Mills, 1967; Mills & Nielsen, 1967), and similar control is suspected in a number of other species. This paper reports the occurrence in Carausius of a diuretic hormone and examines its significance in the regulation of water balance.

De novo transcriptome analysis of the excretory tubules of Carausius morosus (Phasmatodea) and possible functions of the midgut ‘appendices’
The Malpighian tubules are the insect excretory organs, responsible for ion and water homeostasis and elimination of nitrogenous wastes. Post-genomic assays suggest they also metabolize and detoxify xenobiotic compounds and have antimicrobial properties. The Phasmatodea have an additional, unique set of excretory organs referred to predominantly as midgut appendices. Their function and how it c...
متن کاملIdentification of multiple peptides homologous to cockroach and cricket allatostatins in the stick insect Carausius morosus.
Eighteen peptides were isolated from brain extracts of the stick insect Carausius morosus. The peptides were purified in four steps by high-performance liquid chromatography, monitored by their ability to inhibit juvenile hormone biosynthesis by corpora allata of the cricket Gryllus bimaculatus in vitro, and chemically characterised by Edman degradation and mass spectrometry. We obtained comple...

Recently it has been shown that 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) even at concentrations of the order of io" M/1 will stimulate fluid secretion by the Malpighian tubules of two insect species, Rhodnius prolixus Stal and Carausius morosus (Maddrell, Pilcher & Gardiner, 1969). In order to find out more about this interaction the activity of a range of substances chemically related to 5-HT has been studi...

Carotenoids, Metabolism, [14C]/?-Carotene, Insects, Carausius morosus [14C]/?-Carotene was fed to juvenile stick insects, Carausius morosus, o f the fifth instar. Radio activity was incorporated into 2-hydroxy-, 2-oxo-, and 3,4-didehydro-2-oxo-carotenoids of the ß,ß-type. These transformations are due to the insect’s own capacity; any contribution by microbial symbionts can be ruled out. A stu...
متن کاملCalcium Action Potentials in the Skeletal Muscle Fibres of the Stick Insect Carausius Morosus
The ionic requirements for the generation of action potentials in the ventral longitudinal muscle fibres of the stick insect, Carausius morosus, were investigated. Ca-free Ringer rapidly and reversibly abolished the action potential. In the presence of tetraethylammonium (TEA) ions (to suppress outward currents) the overshoot of the action potential changed 26 mV for a 10-fold change in [Ca]0. ...
